I have managed to trash the word app which came installed on my mac os x 10.5.8.
Does anyone know if I am able to reinstate this or restore original settings? No word docs will open at the moment.

Welcome to Mac-Forums..

If you haven't emptied the trash can, you can try to recover the files from there. If you have emptied it, then the original installation media is needed to get it back unless you've been running time machine backups all along so that you can step back to before the snafu happened..

Worst case - you get a copy of LibreOffice which should read most of the Word documents you throw at it.

Ok, then that must mean you bought the computer from a previous owner, right?
And you don't have the Word installation discs, or the product key number, right?
If the original owner managed to transfer the product key to another computer, then you were using an unauthorized copy. If all of the above is true, then you're out of luck. Using another program, like the one suggested above is your only recourse, again, assuming my assumptions are correct.

you might also try disk drill which is free and may or may not work to recover files deleted.

I can't believe I'm the first to point out that TextEdit (including on the Mac) will read Word files just fine.
