Have recently converted to Mac - what a joy!

However, have many old video files from my PC transferred from Sony video camera. They won't play on my Mac. Quicktime says they are not video files but they are listed as Quicktime files...confused!!

VLC can play just about any format, so download that and give it a try.

If they are WMV files, try flip4mac - but I think VLC can play WMV anyway. and it's a pretty nice application.

VLC 2 is awesome, for sure.

You can also download "Perian" which adds file coverage to QuickTime™. It installs as a new preference pane in your System Preferences.

Links for you:

Flip4Mac WMV Player and Perian (both are free)

That should fix you right up in terms of playing (particularly with VLC on board as well). You may still need to convert some files to a now-standard format like MP4 in order to do things like edit them, but I believe that all but two Windows codecs (both very old) have made it over to the Mac in some form so you should be good to go.
