    Therefore to clarify:

    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.

Some of the most popular options are Roxio's Toast (~$60 maybe, price varies a lot) and Burn (free).

Despite the price, I like Roxio's Toast. Not as elegant as an Apple product but they try to make things as simple as possible, even down to offering rudimentary DVD menus, and do all kinds of conversion (almost anything to almost anything else). It is a reliable tool that works well across a HUGE variety of disc types.

Burn (free) is much more basic and limited but can do many of the same conversions and burning. No menus, no oddball formats, nothing fancy, but it does the job. SimplyBurns is another option, a bit more "geeky" in style but again a good basic tool.

I was hoping to download a free application for this process rather them purchase. Could you recommend any decent freeware applications?

Hi there,

Well, for video converting I use Any Video Converter, it's free! And I am very happy with it. (the website is a bit unclear, but it's the upper download)
It does exactly what it promises. You can convert almost any video to almost any format.
As for burning DVD's, I cannot help you. Sorry.

Hope this was useful to you!

Did you not get as far as the "Burn" and "SimplyBurns" parts of my previous message?

Hi chas, no i didn't because they are for purchase and I'm looking for freeware, thanks anyway.

Himmel, did you say this application was free? I installed "Any video converter" and it asked me to pay a registration fee. I'm looking for a Mac freeware Video converter.

Huh? It's free I'm sure of it... I always choose only free software since I'm only 16 years old, and I really can't afford payed software.
Let me see. Okay, it's kinda confusing me too now... When you go here, at the very upper edge of the screen you can choose "Download Mac Video Converter/DVD Ripper free, Video Converter for Mac Freeware download". There it states that the software is free, just as I remember!
Ah look! Here you can download the lite version!

There are many responses here and it's getting complexed I'll try to be as discreet as possible.

I downloaded a movie in AVI format and I'm trying to burn it to disc to watch on DVD.

Do i need a video converter or will a burner do it all in one?

I have "Im Too DVD Copy" which rips and burns in one.

If it's only the converter i need?

Could i then transport the converted files in to" Im Too DVD Copy" and burn to disc?

Sorry for the confusion, i know your all trying.

Can't you just simply put your blanc DVD in your driver, and drag the .avi file to it in Finder? That's how I always do it with movies and music. If you did that, there appears a gray bar at the top of Finder, and there you can choose "burn"
Is that what you mean?

It can't be that simple surly? I thought downloaded movie files in AVI needed to be converted to the correct format to be compatible on all DVD players? Are you saying all i need to do is insert a DVD-R then drag the AVI files from Finder to the disc and the movie will be on the disc ready for a DVD player ? "Really" :(

If the movie will be played on a standard DVD player there will need to be a conversion. The DVD format expects the video to be in MPEG 2 format. Some newer DVD players will play such files without needing to make this conversion.
Check out this article ATPM 12.03 - How To: Performing a Video Extraction. If you don't read the entire thing go as far as the "Gather Your Tools" section.
