• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

hey guys I don't own a mac but my school provides plenty of macs on campus for students to edit videos and other things. The problem is once the computer labs close I cannot save my unfinished work and continue working on it the next day and even if i could save my work there is no guarantee I will be able to use the same computer the next day. I was wondering if there was a way to save my unfinished videos to a usb drive without having to finalize the project then re- capture the work and start over again the next day. It is very frustrating and messes up the sound editing and makes it difficult to edit anything I've done on previous days .

Yes, I think so (provided this isn't against the rules of your class or school).

You should be able to copy the iMovie project file (which would be located in (user)/Movies/iMovie Projects) along with your footage which is in (user)/Movies/iMovie Events to a thumb drive (of sufficient size of course), then put those things back in their respective places on another machine that's running the same version of iMovie (BEFORE you start up iMovie). The thumbnails will have to be reconstructed (automatic when you select the project) but you should then be back where you were.

I haven't tested this, mind you, but in theory it should work.

When you plug in an external drive, it's icon should appear in iMovie's Project and Events Libraries. From within the Project Library, drag and drop your Project onto the icon. You'll be asked whether you want to transfer the associated Events. Choose Yes if you want to work on your Project on another computer.

You may be able to just double click on the Project on the external drive and get it to load, but I haven't tried it.
