External hard drive for HD video editing with imac

I have read that it is best to work on external hard drive to edit HD videos using final cut pro. Could someone recommend a suitable external hard drive. Would like to spend less than £300. Had the iomega companion 3TB in mind but not sure if firewire800 is suitable for this purpose.
My system is 21.5" imac 2.8GHz quadcore i7, 8GB memory, 1TB hard drive, AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB
