• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I'm trying to play these avi files and they won't play with quicktime, vlc or divx and it's driving me mad!
It just says they're in an unsupported format and cannot be played without additional quicktime components but gives no clue as to which one. I have perian already.
One of the videos has this 3ivz trial image appear but I cannot find much out about 3ivz apart from a website to buy it on and I don't want to waste money unless I know it's going to work.
Can anyone help please?

That should be supported in VLC, have you got the latest version

VLC version 2.0.0 was just released in the past week. You may want to upgrade 1.1 12 to 2.0.0. I don't know if that will fix your problem but I have not found any file that VLC won't play.

AVI is a container, not a format. This is why some AVI files play fine, others give people problems. I curse the fools who decided it was a good idea to have 687 (made up number) different audio and video codecs.

Anyway, you should be able to use VLC to determine what the audio and video codecs are exactly, which should help.

I've upgraded to the latest VLC and it works on a couple of the videos but not all.

Thing is, I was able to play them on my old macbook and that definitely didn't have the latest vlc so there still must be something I don't have on my new macbook

Unfortunately there are going to be some windows codecs which will just not play on a mac.
Will probably have to play them on a windows box or in windows in a VM.
