I've never used a Mac before in my life. Just bought this iMac 21.5 and love it. One goal I've set (maybe misguided) is to keep microsoft based software off this machine. Everyone I talk with takes the position that it's the first step to failure. Anyway, when I went to view a Netflix streaming, it wanted to install Silverlight....when I went to run a speed test, it wanted to install stuff too.....so, I haven't done anything yet, but is it a danger to start down this path?
thanks....from an old newbie.....cloroxat

Silverlight isn't that bad, a;though its buffering does seem to be deliberately hobbled to 1 meg on many systems (1 meg!!! - what are they thinking of)

unfortunately, many movie steaming systems use it, so if you want movie streaming its a necessary evil

If anybody knows how to up the buffering I would be grateful, many posts on other forums get you to use alt-crl-shift-S, but this does zip on my mac.

Since I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard 2 months ago and didn't install Silverlight or Java, I've had no problems with video from Netflix or YouTube.
I do have VLC installed so I don't know if that helps at all.

Unless someone is an absolute Microsoft hater, there is no reason at all not to install Silverlight. Very small program, no resources when not in use. Handy to have around when the need arises.

I've installed it on both my iMac and my Windows box, with no problems whatsoever. Without it, I couldn't watch my beloved football when the missus is watching her rubbish! :)

And if you install MS Office 2011, Silverlight will be installed by default.

Open your Applications folder and navigate to:

Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Additional Tools/

You'll see "Silverlight" installed under additional tools.
