Target disk mode using external hard drive?

I was wondering if it was possible to transfer data from my iMac HD to my USB external hard drive as I don't own another apple system to use a external hard drive.

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to do since you mention Target Disk Mode. Target Disk Mode is using one Mac to boot another via a firewire connection. See this LINK and explanation from Apple.

If you just want to clone or transfer the data from your Mac's hard drive to an external drive and make the external bootable, you can use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
