• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I have a Lion imac and a sony DCR-SR57E camcorder. I can't import video to iMovies. Apple say the camcorder is compatible on its list. Sony say the problem lies with Apple. Apple Care now say their compatibility list is wrong and that there are issues. Apple have told me to download VLC Player which I have. I can import the video clips to VLC Player, though it takes an eternity! But I can't get the clips onto iMovies in order to edit. I expected a quick and easy importing and editing process from iMac. How can I import if at all? If not what is the best camcorder to buy to work with iMovies? Thanks in anticipation.

From the camcorder specs, it seems that it records in the mpeg2 format. Just drag the clips into Finder and open/view using MPEGStreamclip. Export to Quicktime, using the Apple Intermediate Codec option as this is what iMovie uses. After that, import into iMovie from the File>Import>Movies menu.
