Hello All,
I recently bought my inlaws a used iMac PPC OS 10.5 (I couldn't stand listening them B...... about how slow their PC was etc.... and I knew they wouldn't fork out the bucks for a new one).

My mother inlaw likes to go to Facebook. She currently cannot view videos because it says she needs flashplayer. I attempted to download the appropriate archived flashplayer for her machine (v10.3), but just as it seems to finish installing I get the message Adobe does not support this platform anymore. I got the archived Flashplayer from Adobe, so I don't quite understand the problem. Are all people with older macs no longer able to view video on FB either?

Because I've had such good luck with Mac-Forum answering my questions in the past I thought I would put the question out on this forum before attempting to look for an Adobe forum or even a FB forum (if there is one).

Many Thanks,
MMottster

Sadly the only way is to directly click the Youtube link, rather than trying to view it in Facebook. It will still work this way, but Facebook's constant updates have prevented it working within the pages there, and this is why you get the message.

Quick question to go along with Kevins question. Can you open Videos directly using You Tube? If not maybe you have an Intel version of Flash. Just a thought.

Also, Flash v10.1 is the final version that supported the PowerPC architecture. You mentioned trying to install v10.3, that will not work.

I am VERY sure my iBook G4 with 10.5 on it plays videos while in You Tube. Will try that later and get back.

My Powerbook G4 with Leopard does, no problem, just not in Facebook (you used to be able to view them on the Facebook page).

Kevin is right and FB has messed things up yet again. If you click the direct link to You Tube video opens fine. It's an FB issue to add to the many FB caused issues! :D Grin

Do not install a newer Intel Flash Player on a Power PC machine! Tell FB to take a hike! :D

Thank you everyone. Yes, watching video on Youtube is not a problem, just video's loaded directly to FB. So if someone loads a video to FB of the dog playing, there's no way she'll be able to watch it on FB? (while on iMac PPC)?

OK, v10.1, not 10.3 for Flashplayer, but it sounds like FB will be something I can't fix on their iMac. I'll clean up their piece of crap PC so they can use it strictly for surfing the net.

Everyone is right, FB keeps making so many changes, it is annoying.

When I was trying to figure out the Flashplayer issue in the beginning, I did try to install the Intel player version. When it didn't work, it made me remember what the guy said when I purchased it (this is NOT an Intel Mac). So I uninstalled the Intel version and went looking for the archived version.

Correct.

This is reason #87 why nobody should be investing in a PPC mac at this stage, no matter how cheap. Find a used Intel Mac for them and they'll be good to go.

I loved my iBook as well. :( (R.I.P)

PowerPC still has a place in the computing world I think. It may be outdated, running into problems such as this, but they're still a nice, cheap alternative to somebody who can not afford an Intel Mac.

In this case the real issue is Facebook. I see 1000's of complaints daily from FB friends. So maybe I should stick out my tongue at FB and not at Chas! :D

Haha. Yes, Facebook seems to always be changing things, and not for the better (or so I hear) I personally don't use it, so I really wouldn't know. :Smirk:

I have met so many old friends who I would have never been able to find anyway else there, or I would not bother with FB.

I love my Powerbook G4 too, in fact I use it all of the time for browsing, as my main iMac is out in our hallway, under the stairs. I will lament it's death (if it ever dies).
Facebook is the real issue, and Youtube aren't much better to be fair. They are always messing with code. Currently my media player will view Youtube, but has no sound.
