Deleting email

Hey everyone I have a question about my email and deleting messages. This is what happens, I am using gmail, after I read my mail I delete the ones that I want and then go to the trash folder and delete them there, but here is where the problem comes in, the next time I open up my mail the deleted messages will still be there! I can go to all mail and they will still be there also. Any ideals what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

are you using IMAP with gmail or something like that?
