"Needed" is a bit of a loaded term and Flash Player has had no shortage of security issues (usually fixed in due course, but still) -- but having said that I would suggest you download it still. Not everything has switched over to HTML5 and in many cases HTML5 can't exactly replicate what Flash can offer, which is why so many ads -- sorry, sites -- use it.

OSX used to come with Flash installed but since Lion Apple left it out. Like was said above, I would install it just for some sites that only use Flash.

It might be worth looking into a Flash blocker for your respective browser (each one has one). They work well in blocking Flash content which is a great way to provide a little more stability for your browsing experience. You can get them here: Chrome, Safari (scroll down and install ClickToFlash), Firefox and Opera (it has a built in content blocker).
