I just ordered the new iMac (my first mac) and it should be here on monday. I have some questions:

1. Does the iMac have good grips on its base to prevent it from sliding around?

2. Will I be able to email people MS word files who are using XP, and will they be able to email me word files too?

1. I just tried it on mine and I thought I was going to rip the computer off of the stand. It seems to be extremely secure.

2. Absolutely. MS Word documents on Mac are completely compatible with Windows (and vice versa).

Great, thanks alot.

I have been worrying that my cat would hit the wire and pull off the imac :eek:neye: .

My school uses windows machines and I wanted to know if I would continue to be able to email myself files post-switch, I am glad I can.

Thanks alot for your help.

You will have to buy the Mac version of Office (OfficeMac 2004), but it will work fine with Windows Office files and vice-versa.

Or you can use Open Office (FREE) if you don't want to have to pay out lots of bucks to MickySoft. There is also NeoOffice (It's OpenOffice done for OS X) (AGAIN FREE) and there are a few others (ALSO FREE) that will read and write in the Word format. Of the ones i have tried so far i like Open Office the best.

On the upside, for students Office is 150, and you get three licenses instead of just one.

re question 1:
You're thinking in a windows mindset - Example: "Rubber grips to prevent sliding around sound like a sensible idea".

Apple thinks different and utilises creative, elegant and unobtrusive solutions instead: "Let's make it weigh a bloody ton to stop it sliding around on desks!"

Thanks for all the help, I am happy to say I just got my iMac... I love it!!

Another quick (very newbee) question: Can I lock up the system without needing to log out and close the programs?

i think you can set the screen saver to require a password to reopen. then just set an expose corner(system prefs) to start screensaver, everytime you wanna lock computer just turn on the screensaver.

magic!
