First, im using a leopard macbook pro, fully updated. second, i have that disc drive problem that seems to plague macs, where you put a disc in and the mac spits it out 5 seconds later, so im using a usb disc drive. My problem is, once ive partitioned boot camp, and it says insert the windows disc, which i do, then it restarts, and a screen comes up that says please insert the boot disc and hit any key, even though the disc is in the drive. the mac never has any problems finding any disc in the external, in fact i reinstalled OSX with that drive earlier today. I'm stuck and the closest mac store is a good 2hr drive. any ideas?

As you found out, you can not install Windows via the Boot Camp Assistant from an external USB drive. Mac OS X yes, Windows no. The reason being is that there are no drivers for the external USB device until Windows boots up.

You will either need to get your optical drive replaced or use virtual software to install Windows. (Parallels, Fusion, VirtualBox)
