Hi - New to a Mac. Is there any way I can make photos loaded to the mac appear in both my and my wife's user accounts without each of us having to load into iTunes separately?

I think there is a way to set visibility to both of the accounts.

There may be a setting somewhere (probably in Settings>Sharing) but the easiest way I know is to create a Shared folder on your Mac and then move or copy the iPhoto library to it. Navigate to it with Finder and Double-click on it to launch iPhoto.
Both of you will then be able to access and edit the library.
