I have a sluggish 2006 mp with a 27" cinema monitor. I am considering getting a mini and using my existing mouse/keyboard/monitor, etc. instead of paying so much for an imac when i don't need the monitor. I really don't need the "pro" anymore. Mostly I do email, on line searches/buying, a little excel & word so I don't need a "cannon to swat a fly."

Any advice would be appreciated

You did not list how much ram you have in the 06 if it was like mine it only had 1GB
which was not enough bumping the ram would wake it up and save you a lot of money for what you use it for.

Have you tried any maintenance programs such as Onyx to run cleaning and maintenance tasks? Here is a link make sure you download the version that matches your operating system which you did not share with us. Also how full is the hard drive - needs at least 15% free space to work efficiently. And 2GB memory is pretty slim for a Mac Pro.

I have run mackeeper, drive genius and a couple more but not much improvement. I will go to the link you provided and try that.
thanks, jack

You could:
1) Pop for a new internal drive
2) I believe you are Lion compatible. So you could upgrade to Lion and then create a Lion Boot Disk on USB Thumbdrive

A Pioneer superdrive will set you back about $40 to $50 and you may be able to find a used slightly older model on eBay etc.

ok, here is where i am: 1) the hd on my 2006 mp is corrupted and is now making noises. i have already lost my 2nd hd. so i know that i shouldn't spend a bunch of money on a 5 1/2 year old computer. i need to buy a new one. 2) because i do not have an operating internal dvd, i have ordered a lion thumb drive that should be here in a few days. 3) i have backed up the hd onto a 1tb external drive. 3) my hope is to be able to fix the hard drive after i install lion. 4) what i would really like to do -- and don't know how to do it -- is to set up my mbp with all the backed up stuff so it can be my primary until i get a new computer. 5) new computer: i wonder if a mini computer would be a decent substitute for my 2006 mp? i hate to spend the money for an imac because i already have a 27" apple cinema display. lots of trouble!! :-(

Boot from the thumb drive and go into Utilities >Disk utility > Repair Disk before running the installer and see what is reported.

thanks, harry. i'll do that as soon as i get it. meanwhile, i have looked at 27" imacs and mac mini's both with 8mb ram. quite a difference in $'s but i have no idea what the speed difference is between a qc i5 (3.1 mhz) and a qc i7 (2 mhz). can you help me?

27" imac mac mini
$2,194 $1,294
monitor 27 -
core qc i5 qc i7
speed 3.1 2.0
ram 8 8
hd 1tb 2x750
thunderbolt x -
thundrblt cable x -
os x lion x x
keyboard w -
mouse mm -

what would you buy? if i go imac i think the best thing to do would be to get the 27" and sell the stand alone 27" i have. but i just flat don't have any competence in this computer business. but as i have said before, i don't need the power of a mp but i sure do want a fast one. thanks. jack
