As a newcomer to the world of Mac, and a languages teacher, I really need to know a simple and preferably easily memorable way to enter accents in the Mac versions of Word, Excel and so on.

There MUST be a good solution. Can you help?

Many thanks.

Just remember the accents are mainly accessed using Alt Vowels

most of the accents are alt vowels - that's the easiest way to remember it

é (press alt e then the letter you want, e in this case. alt e then press a gives you á)

è (press e then alt `, top left of keyboard next to 1)

likewaise alt ` then i gives you ì)

ü (alt u then u)

â (alt i then a)

otherwise a simple alt a gives you å

alt c gives you ç

alt o gives you ø

If you're using Lion, simply hold down the vowel key and you'll be presented with an iOS style tooltip. For instance, this is what I get when I hold down the 'e' key:

Simply press the corresponding number key to add the accent that you need.
