• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Hi,

I want to convert my DVD's to the latest .mov file format using the H.264 codec. Does anyone know of a program that can do this? Or do you have to convert it to a .mp4 or .avi then convert that to the .mov file.

You can use Handbrake which can be downloaded from http://www.macupdate.com.

Keep in mind though that you should only do this with movies you can legally copy.

Also .mov, .mp4, etc are container formats meaning that an H.264 file could be a .mov or .mp4. The more common thing to see will be for it to end in .mp4 (or .m4v for the iTunes/iPod compatible formats).

H.264 is simply part of the the MPEG-4 specification.

I personally use Handbrake as well, but I know a lot of people who favor MacTheRipper. You should try them both and see which works better for you.
