How to turn on mute?

I have a colleague with a mac who does not know how to mute it.

Can you please advise me how to do this simple task?

I have never owned a Mac and only vaguely remember using one in 1992/3.

The volume icon in the menu bar or the mute key (F 10).

There is a button on the keyboard.
