Hey, I've used PC's my whole life and want a cheap, used mac. I think an iMac G5 would be good (I don't mind performace issues) but is it a good chioce for the modern day.

I would be willing to take suggestions but won't be spending over £250GBP on the mac itself.

Thanks, iNerd.

Honest answer...no! The last iMac G5 was discontinued in January, 2006 (over 5.5 years ago). The "oldest" iMac G5 was from August, 2004. The "newest"/latest version of the Mac OS it can run is OS 10.5.8 (which was replaced by OS 10.6 in August, 2009).

The latest version of the Mac OS is OS 10.7.2 "Lion"....and you need a Macintosh computer with at least an Intel core 2 duo cpu to run it (an iMac G5 does not have this cpu).

So no...an iMac G5 is not "a good choice for the modern day".

HTH,

- Nick

To add to what Nick suggested, I would go with at least an early iMac with an Intel CPU or a Intel Mac Mini used to keep the cost where you want it. I do agree though on the C2D Vs a Core Duo that was used in the very first run of Intel Macs. That way you can run Lion if you want and a lot more Software that is up to date.

I'm running a Core Duo that I bought new in 2006. I wish I had at least a Core 2 Duo so I could run Lion. Don't buy a G5, they just aren't worth it anymore.

Support what others have said. Save your cash until you can afford to go into an Intel machine capable of running Lion, OS X.7. At least a Core 2 Duo capacity as the very minimum.

Great iNerd. You would have been terribly disappointed with a G5 not running the latest operating system and being s-l-o-w.
