It seems like my pins in the ethernet port are kinda bent down. Is there anyway to bend them back up? I've tried a toothpick and it doesn't seems to work. I can't connect to the internet anymore using that port anymore.

what do you mean? the set up for a rj-45 is usualy 8 pins in a row bent down at an angle to hold the pins in contact with the plug. a picture would be nice.

To me they do look bent down. Pin 1 especially which is one of the pins used in Cat5 cabling. 1&2 3&6 are required. I have seen RG45 jacks like that and was able to get the pins back up with a jewelers screwdriver. If you try it though be CAREFULL.

Did you ever force a RG45 in there upside down? Looks like something was forced in there to bend them like that.

I just bought the ibook yesterday. I've tried using a small pin to push them up but i can't seem to get them up. Any other ideas. Is there anyway to test my logic board to see if somethingis wrong?

1 & 2 are a pair usually with orange/white on 1 and Orange on 2 with 568B wiring. 3 & 6 are the other pair using Green/White on 3 and Green on 6. With 568A wiring the orange and green pair are reversed.

I think it will work if you can just get pin 1 there on the right side to stand up. Someone did something to bend them down like that. I work with networking almost daily and have only ran into a Rj45 jack like that maybe 2 times. Even pin 2 next to it looks a little bent but pin 1 is the bad one.

since you only spent 200, could you possibly pay the apple store to fix it?

i dont know what the inside of an ibook looks like but if there is not any warranty on it and you feel like taking it apart, it would be easier to fix that way.

I was going to suggest taking it apart but did some thinking and bet the pins side is right against the motherboard so it would still be a pain. Good luck. Just be carefull. If you can not get it to work just get a USB ethernet adapter. I have a feeling the built in ethernet is fine and it's just the pins.

Let us know what happens in the end.

But of course, if he doesn't take it to the Apple Store, there will be not only the pride of getting a great deal on a laptop, but being capable of fixing it yourself. If he took it to the Genius Bar, it would not surprise me if they took one look at it and wanted to replace the entire Logic Board. On the other hand, it can't hurt to take it in for an estimate if fixing pin 1 doesn't go over well.
