I recently switched from PC to a new Macbook Pro 13.3" with Lion OSX 10.7. I love it. But I am having trouble installing my Canon Pixma MG 5220 printer software on it. I went to Canon's website and it said to download the drivers/software. So I am left with a bunch of .dmg files on my desktop and I have no idea what to do with them. Do I install the software like I normally would with the CD, then copy and paste the .dmg files into the appropriate folders? I'm lost and need some help please!!

DMG stands for Disk Image. In other words, double-click on the DMG file and a "virtual disk" will appear on the desktop. Double-click on the virtual disk, and there's your software (probably an installer). Double-click on the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

Think of it like getting an xmas present. You unwrap the wrapping paper (the DMG), there's the box. Open the box (the virtual disk). There's the actual item (the software).

PS. I should add that there's a VERY good chance that you don't need ANY of the software you downloaded. Before you go through the installation, why not try simply turning on the printer and connecting it to the computer? Then go to System Preferences, Print & Scan, and see if the printer doesn't just "appear" in there (it probably will). If it does, you're done. Welcome to Macintosh!

Try chas_m's suggestion first. I think it worked with my Canon. If your printer is network capable their directions probably stink. You will probably find it easier to plug the printer directly into the computer and install the regular drivers, then disconnect the printer and then run the network setup.

That worked, thank you. I just had to click each .dmg file and after it mounted I was able to install with no problems. Thanks for the quick responses!

From a total newbie switcher: a HUGE thank you to this and the other threads I've just found which have enabled me to set up my Brother printer connected to my Windows XP machine. And to the thread which explained in words of one syllable what to do with the printer drivers I downloaded! And the answer is a whole lot easier and more intuitive than on Windows! :D
