    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.

I've got AVI files of some tv show episodes and I would like to put them on a DVD to be able to view on my DVD player. I once tried iDVD with mpeg files but found file compression an issue.

How could I burn these AVI files on a DVD? Is there some kind of app that would allow me to put all these files in and then compress them to fit to a 4.7GB DVD.

A step-by-step process would be great.

Thanks very much

hmm...

I had a similar problem recently. What I did was use a free program called ffmpegx to convert the .avi file to a dv file (which was quite large, on the order of 30 gigs...yes, gigs). iDVD can handle dv files and it worked fine. One problem was, that once I imported the 30 gig movie into iDVD, the dvd ended up being 4.1 gigs out of the allowed 4.0 gigs, and that was with music and menu pictures. What I ended up doing was burning it onto a dual layer dvd. There's probably a better way, but this worked well for me.

Use Roxio Toast (at least 6.0), 7.0 allows the creation of several menu themes.

Click the Video Tab
On the left you'll cdd VCD, Super VCD and DVD.
Make your selection of movie type.
Drag your AVI's to the Video tab.
You'll see a meter by the record button, shows projected disc usage
Click Record. They'll be encoded and burned to disc. Encoding takes
awhile (depending on CPU power), and depending on the AVI/MPG/DivX quality, the end result will be about the same, or slightly lesser quality.

Thanks IanCT! Someone just asked me to nab Friday's episode of Threshold which I only have on my DVR. I was wondering how I would do this for her.
