music library on to back up harddrive.

Hello there. Hoping somebody can assist me. i'm transferring all my c.d.s on to i tunes and then putting the tracks onto my i pod and then onto a back up hard drive. I've done the i pod but when i plug in the hard drive it won't show up on the side bar but it is on my desktop. what am I doing wrong? I'm on a macbook and the hard drive is ' sumvision e gem ' Hope someone can help. Many thanks. P.S. I am naff on computers so you have to speak simply and slowly. :Blushing:
