Recently got a Mac running 10.6 and was wondering how this app store works. Do you setup an account with a credit card first, then download dmg images? Where else can you get Mac apps? Been a Windows user all my life, so I haven't a clue. Thanks.

That's essentially it. When you click on the the install button in the app store the download begins. When finished the app is moved to your Applications folder.

As far as other sources for software go there are many. I still order software from a few mail order/Internet vendors such as Macmall.com from time to time. Most Mac developers also have options to purchase directly form their sites as well.

CNet also has a Mac download section of freeware, shareware and commercial demos.
