can you download and run windows media player, for wmv, wma, avi, on a mac without having windows installed?

nope, Microsoft discontinued Windows media Player for mac years ago

I believe iTunes may play wma, but I do know that the open source VLC media player will play just about anything you throw at it, including wmv and avi

You can also install Flip4Mac which will add WMA/WMV capabilities to QuickTime.
