• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

advice please

I'm trying to decide on a G5 for editing w/ final cut studio. Most of the pieces I do are long format (60-80 min) with a lot of short clips and effects. Which processor would be best for my purposes-- 2.3 or 2.7. How much difference is there between them? Also, I know I want 4GB of RAM but how much difference in speed is there between going with the (4) 1GBs or (8) 500s? Also. does the monitor have to be a Mac? I don't want to get much more than I'll need, but HD is already in our sights. I'm new to Mac and am not sure about what peripherals I'll need. Will my current monitors & printer work (PC based) or will I have to change them out for Macs?
Many thanks for your input!

First off processor speed doesn't really matter. It may years from now but if you are over 1ghz you are pretty much good. GHZ to me is basically a way to drive up the price with hardly any much more performance. I would say the 1.8 is very adequate. I hear it is better to go with the 512 over the gig in the slots but personally I would get the gig. Speed slows down the bigger chip you have from what I hear but I really don't care and never have seen the big difference. Any non-apple monitor should work. I haven't seen one that hasn't. Not sure about your printer though.

Hold off for now. There's rumors afloat that Apple intends to upgrade the Powermacs VERY soon. Check the printer mfg website to see if drivers for OSX exist and your monitor should work fine.

Between now and Christmas there are rumors of a full line upgrade meaning iB,PB,PM,iM,eM,and mini. I wouldn't wait, rumors are always rumors.

It is rumored that I will die someday. Just like it is inevitable that I will die the same is true for updates. It will happen. When????? Who knows.
