Anyone have their 401K invested in the Stock Market?

Today was the worst day in the US Stock Market since the financial crisis began. The DJA fell 512 points to erase all gains made in 2011. LINK

Welcome to the "club". The TSX (Toronto Stock Exchange) dropped down to October 2010 levels today and the German and British markets had their worst day of the year. It's moments like this that I'm glad that my investments are no-risk.

Hope no one was hit exceptionally hard today.

Actually not quite true. By being conservative you have mitigated the risk that your investment will drop in value. But, there is a counter risk that being too conservative will cause you to lose relative value as inflation outpaces interest earned.

My reason for 1/4 vs 3/4 split was to allow me to profit somewhat if there were gains without losing too much from a down turn. Combining that with shifting from conservative to aggressive if there is a down turn actually ends up being lowest overall risk. Sometimes means you need to carry a pack of Rolaids though. ;P

While I agree with that logic, I'm a 25 year old student. I don't have the room to take any risk with the little extra money that I have. And yes, it is true, I am glad about it :p.

I don't know what "Vansmith" is invested in...but as a student...he may be saying "no-risk" = no stock market investments...thus nothing to loose.

But soon he will be making the BIG BUCKS...and then will have to worry about these sorts of things!;)

One can only hope. Maybe then I'll have some room to take a risk with my fiscal state.

The smartest thing anyone can do is start investing as early as possible. A rule I didn't follow!!!:(

I wanted my "toys" (home, cars, computers, girls, etc.) more than investing.;)

That's when you marry a women who has lots of potential...or makes or has a lot of money!:):)

Lucky me invested in Apple shares when retired in 1999. Only suggestion Nick is a nymphomaniac who owns a hotel!

What little money smarts I have I learned in the last five years. And, Nick, I am right there with you on the things I didn't do right . . . Only thing I did manage was to absolutely marry the right woman. :)

Van,
I agree with Nick. One of these days you'll be rich enough we'll be hitting you up for loans (or rides in your jet).

Harry,
I only wish I had been smart enough to buy Apple stock!

She's sitting right behind/besides you isn't she? :p

I like this faith everyone has in me being wealthy. Now I'm really committed to becoming rich! ;)

No, but I tell her the same thing all the time.

And, remember we expect rides in your jet.

If I must provide rides in my jet, you may all come and join in the opulent comfort of the as of yet unnamed jet ;).

Well, it looks like the Asian markets were getting hammered as well. To put a positive spin on this, let's just be thankful it's not Oct. 28, 1929 right now.

Quoting Futurama makes that the best post in this thread hands down.
