• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Problem With QT Movies Coming In As 'FLV'

Hi,

Don't know if this is the correct place for this question, but I am having an issue with importing You Tube videos into my 'Movies' folder.

I have been using ClipGrab for the longest time with no problems. The videos always came into Movies in Quick Time format. Suddenly today, every time I download a video, it comes into Movies as 'FLV' and opens with the VLC player. Then I have to go in and convert it into a Quick Time movie. It can be done, but it's annoying and time-consuming and I don't know what happened to cause this change. I changed the default media player to QT but it still comes through as an FLV and I have to convert it. I trashed the Clip Grab app I had and replaced it with the latest version but it's still doing the same thing. I've restarted my Macbook a number of times, same problem.

What I'm wondering is this: a couple of days ago I was in the middle of something when I got a software update for Perian and I was too busy to install it so I ignored it. I figured maybe this update might have something to do with this issue. I did a Software Update check and my system says there's no software update available.

Did I miss my shot somehow, and that caused this problem, or is ClipGrab just messed up on its own, or could it be my computer? My Mac has been doing really crazy things lately and I don't have Apple Care so I can't bring it anywhere to be looked at and can't afford a new one.

Would appreciate any advice! :)

If it's Perian that's that source of the issue:

1. Open System Preferences.
2. Select Perian.
3. Update it.

If it's not, you either inadvertently changed something in ClipGrab (which I've never even heard of so I can't help you with that) or you need to look at using a different program to grab YouTube clips. Also, what does this have to do with Web Design and Hosting?

Finally, just because your Mac is out of warranty doesn't mean you can't take it anywhere. Of course you can -- any independent Apple Authorised Service Provider will be happy to take a look at it. They will charge you, of course.
