Lion recovery mode allows reinstalls via Internet

Apple-Lion-new-sm.jpg
OS X Lion has a special recovery mode which includes the option to reinstall the OS over the Internet, a leaked internal AppleCare document reveals. The mode is invoked by holding down Command-R during boot, and presents users with several options. On a basic level it lets people access online help, or run Disk Utility to scan, repair, partition or even erase volumes. Under dire circumstances a person can restore from a Time Machine backup, or "reinstall Lion over the Internet from AppleÃ*s servers," according to the AppleCare note....

Oh, ye of little faith! Everyone who cried about how they were going to restore without a physical disc. Did you really think Apple would leave you high and dry?

It's kind of weird. We started out with really powerful (for the time) mainframes shared among a bunch of dummy terminals, then we went to individual computers, and now we're going back to something more like the mainframe and dummy terminal era.

Rob, are you sure you want Schweb to rain on you? In that rain will be a mind altering drug that will make you follow Steve Jobs into the clouds! :D

This is all well and good (and I'm being honest there) but such a method assumes that you have a network connection. While most people have reasonably easy access to the Internet (in the developed world at least), a sizeable portion do not (or at least a good enough connection). This announcement doesn't negate the fact that an optical/USB copy is still the better option.

And before I get 7 responses with links to instructions on how to make a bootable copy, I realize that you can make a local copy that won't depend on a network connection. My point is that Apple should be the ones providing instructions or an 'offline copy'.

Also to make a bootable copy, one needs internet in the first place to download Lion! By Internet I mean at least some decent broadband and not dialup.
