Is .app the binary execute file?

What's the difference between .dmg and .app? Which one is the binary execute file?

.dmg's are Disk iMaGe files...used to package applications for download.

.apps are APPlications (executables.)

When downloading an application, you mount the dmg by double-clicking it, and then install the app by dragging it to your hard disk (usually the Applications folder, but you can store it anywhere you like.)

Then you can unmount (eject) the image and delete it.

.binary and .package

.pkg files are usually installer files and .bin's need to be unstuffed with stuffit and can then be installed.
