...but is there a freebie "Paint" program included with current Mac software?

I just need to draw a simple layout of a home floor plan.

Your Powerbook should have come with Omnigraffle - a really nice little drawing app: Perfect for what you want to do.

Consumer macs come with appleworks, which also has a drawing feature.
