It still boggles my mind that Apple survived the late eighties. The Mac wasn't dead, but it was handily outclassed by computers like the Amiga, which also ran a GUI, and had full multimedia capabilities and true multitasking for a fraction of the cost of an entry-level Mac.

If only Commodore had half the marketing savvy of Apple back in the day, but I digress...

The early to mid-1990's were pretty scary times as well for Apple!

I always see you mention your Commodore. I loved my 64Bit and the 1 thing that always remember is the command. ,8,1 :)

I was a big time Amiga user back in the day, although I got my start with the 64. That command was LOAD "*",8,1

The Amiga was a very different beast. I was developed about the same time as the Mac, by a group of former Atari engineers. It was basically their attempt at putting together their dream computer - and it eclipsed just about everything else out there.

Unfortunately, the company was bought by Commodore, who were desperate to find a successor to the 64/128, which were very limited. As such, it wasn't well marketed and in many cases, it was looked at as a game machine.

Although the Amiga met with success in Europe, it never really took off in the US and elsewhere, although it did find its niche in video editing and rendering.

But in 1985, just a year after the Mac was released, it featured a full, preemptive multitasking OS, a host of dedicated co-processors, full multimedia capabilities (it could display 4096 simultaneous colors in a day when Macs were black and white and PCs could barely display 16 colors) and could even run MS-DOS and its associated applications by way of a daughterboard. All of this in 256MB of RAM and an 8MHz 68000 chip.

Truly, it is a crime that it never really took off - mostly because of the ineptitude of Commodore management, which eventually pushed the company out of business in 1994.

It boggles my mind that I survived the late eighties (and the three decades that preceeded them for that matter) ;)

I can certainly agree. Between the finger you almost cut off & the hamstring you pulled (both rather recently)...who knows what else you've been up to since the late-80's!;)

Don't get me started . . . the only thing I will admit to is almost shooting myself to death with a bow and arrow when I was 12 . . . a long story.

Wait, there was stuff before the 80s? You mean, like real objects? Is this that pre-historic time I keep hearing about? :p

Yes...the American Civil War!;)

Oops...that was the 1860's...not the 1960's!;)

Scoff if you must, just remember if a mega-virus ever permanently destroys computers and calculators, I still remember how to use a slide rule. :Angry-Tongue:
Then we'll see . . .

Does me having to look up what a slide rule is show you my youthful naivete? ;)

No, unfortunately. Slide rules disappeared very quickly following the advent of reasonably priced calculators. I doubt my children have ever even seen one.
