Apple backs down on in-app subscription pricing

ios5-newsstand.jpg
Apple has suddenly and without fanfare thrown out its App Store guidelines on in-app subscription pricing, reports note. Later this month Apple was set to begin enforcing a recent policy on subscriptions, requiring that any outside app subscription options be matched by in-app ones. Of special worry to publishers, though, was an insistence that in-app options cost the "same price or less," even though Apple claims a 30 percent cut of App Store revenue. The policy drew the scrutiny of the FTC....

I believe I called this the day subscriptions were announced and everyone said it would mean the end of publishing on the iPad. :)

I'd also point to this as a cautionary point against those crying end of the world over Lion's MAS and bootable disk fiasco. Apple can always adapt and most likely will where it makes sense.

I was more worried about services like Netlfix and Hulu. Seems like the majority of companies didn't even bat an eye over the controversy to begin with.

Woohoo. I had just read that old thread this morning.

I'm extremely glad my prediction of an abandonment of the platform due to this will now come to naught.

Now, I can seriously consider an upgrade to the iPad2.

I remember a company posted prominently on its website that it was going out of business due to the new subscription fees. I wonder if they're going to retract the statement and/or keep the app running.

Good news.

I was worried that Amazon might remove the Kindle App from all Apple devices. I love the fact that I can use my Mac, iPad, iPhone, PC, Android phone, etc. and read the same books on all of them, with every one starting at the page I had reached, regardless of which device I used last.

Actually, the same applies with things like Dropbox - put files in that on one device and they are available anywhere. I just with my office had not locked Dropbox out on the Corporate network, although I can see potential security aspects involved. Was very useful for making my staff rota accessible from Home, Work, the Coffee Shop, etc. Now I have to use email - not as convenient.

I feel sure Apple will see sense with the Lion disk issue as well in time :)
