this is called a Kernel Panic. usually, it points to a hardware error;

it would be great if you could get the log.

("You restarted your computer due to an error" - the log will be in this dialog)

Also, here's a question:

Do you quit (as in "actually quit, not just close windows") your programs BEFORE you shut down? And if you do, do you still have the kernel panic?

@chas_m Hi and thanks for your response... i actually tried yesterday ... quit all my programs before i shut down and still got the grey screen!

I wonder what could really be the problem!

Next step: boot up the Mac holding down the SHIFT key. Keep holding it until you see your login screen with the words "Safe Boot" in red. Login as normal.

NOW try shutting down. Did you get a kernel panic that time?

Okay did that as well enetered the safe mode...didnt run any programs and then shut down...took a while to shut down but it did without panic,, but then again panic doesnt happen always in the normal mode either...its like 6/10 times i get it.

Maybe i should try again? WHat does that panic log file say about this?

Many Thanks for your time..:)

The same place. Highlight starting at the top, drag down to the bottom until the scroll bar scrolls through and you have the entire log highlighted.
