Lion requirements: 64-bit CPU, 2 GB of RAM

As expected, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will require an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (or better, such as the i3/5/7 series or Xeon chips) and 2 GB of RAM for a compliant install when it ships this summer. This is consistent with the requirements from earlier builds of the OS.

Judging by our Twitter inquiries, however, there is a good bit of confusion over the difference between "Core 2 Duo" (which is supported) and "Core Duo" (which is not). Here's the simple rule: Did you purchase your Mac (new) after December 2007? It's probably OK for Lion, although it might need more RAM.

Core 2 Duo processors have been used in the Mac line since 2006, and powered most consumer Macs prior to the introduction of the Core 'i' MacBook Pro models last year (except for the Xeon & successor CPUs in the Mac Pro and XServe). Core Duo and Core Solo chips were only used in the first-generation Intel Macs (MacBook/MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac mini), and were not used at all after 2006. Even the low-power first generation MacBook Air from 2008 used a Core 2 Duo.

Hope that helps! We'll have more details on "what Mac owners need to know about Lion" later today.

Very confusing to many users to say the least.

Dare say there will be some cheap Lion packages on eBay etc in weeks ahead.

Well darn. If I want to run Lion on my Mac mini, I have to go cough up about...oh...$30+ for the extra gig of RAM...just to meet base requirements for Lion. My MacBook meets those requirements, but only so: it has an Intel Core 2 Duo, it has 2 GB of RAM.

Methinks maybe upgrading Lion isn't a good idea. Especially if both of my Macs are at the bottom tier of the Lion specs list. I could simply purchase another 2 GB of RAM (two 2 GB DDR3) for roughly $30 (please, someone correct me on these prices).

It might be worth trying Lion on the MacBook, but in all honesty, I think it's worth handing down the MB to a relative, and getting a new Mac.

It also seems to me that if the latest MacBook and Mac mini have C2D's and a minimum of 2GB RAM, new hardware is coming up sometime this year. And next year I imagine.

Interesting that my new (March 2011) MBA is minimum spec for OSX Lion. Really though, I don't use it for anything taxing at all. VERY basic computing only.

Whether Lion is compelling enough to make me switch remains to be seen.

Actually the more pressing question is do I purposefully purchase the iMac I've been thinking of before Lion launches, in order to avoid running two different OSX versions? Or wait, as the iMac isn't strictly speaking a necessity as yet.

At least this will put an end to all of the speculation....
