• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

So I'd like to record a movie and slideshow of my kids for their grandmother in iDVD. Simple enough. I've got the tools, I can do this, but my question is about regions. I know we're region #1 here in the US, so I assume that once I'd selected this (and I have) in iDVD, it will record my DVD in region #1.

My mother lives in China. :p

More than likely her computer (or DVD player) is set to Region # 6. Not knowing a whole lot about regions, I'm wondering if recording a DVD will produce it in a regional code or region-free, and if I need to do anything special to make sure she can play it there. Ideas? Thoughts?

iDVD creates region free discs - see here - link.

BUT you may need to set the DVD to be PAL format in order for the DVD to play properly (nothing to do with regions).

Thought of that too, but not sure if this would carry over to computers or simply DVD players only. I do know they make & sell "multi-system" DVD players overseas that (supposedly) play NTSC and PAL, but its all rather moot if Mom doesn't have one. She, natually, has no clue what she has.

Time to experiment! ;P
