• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Video Capture - Mpeg4 Quicktime Help??

I bought Elgato's Video Capture package a couple of days ago with the intention to transfer footage from a Video 8 camera into Final Cut for editing - the import process was pretty simple but it's left me with an MP4 that plays the original sound but shows only a green screen when played in Quicktime and iTunes. VLC however can play it fine. The Codec is just standard H.264 if that makes any difference...

I don't know too much about the difference between formats with regard to compatibility so was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction as to what I'll need to do? Do I need to convert the file type or can I export the footage from VLC to make it fully compatible with QT etc? Or perhaps I just need to download a plugin or converter?

Download MPEG Streamclip (free), open the movie file in that, save it as MP4. That should do the trick.

VLC isn't reporting enough detail on the codec to determine what the problem is. You might try installing Flip4Mac WMV Player and Perian (again, both free), which should enable QuickTime to play the video and give you proper info on what the codec ACTUALLY is.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I've now tried all those and still can't get it to work. I'm wondering if the problem might be with the Elgato software as it was formatted in that originally? I'll have a look for some updates...
