My MBA has 2 USB port.

1 is used to put usb modem for surfing the net

and other one is generally not in use..

but now if i connect a pendrive or HDD to the other port

" it says one or more USB is using more power so it is disabling one usb and other one works"

this not happened earlier .

....i had earlier used belkin chill mat which has 4 usb ports extra and i used all of them plus the one left on my mba and all were working....

now if i use the 2 ports in MBA then it shows that problem....any help

Could it be a hardware problem as only right one is giving probles.

well could it be this modem thing you have plugged into the left? have you tried swapping them over?

USB ports are limited in the amount of power they can hand out..and USB modems are notorious at breaking the spec and trying to suck more power than they should. You'll find using a powered-hub will alleviate a lot of this..

Also, on laptops..the OS will try to limit USB usage further since you're sucking power out of the battery..you might have better luck when you're plugged in..

^^ What he said. Oftentimes some drives will have two plugs on one cable for some power hungry drives or something. So in this case the combined two is probably too much for it. powered usb thingy should help.
