Hi Mac People,

I have a new 2010 15" MBP & iPhone 4.

So far I've figured out the big one is the laptop, and the small one is the phone.

How am I doing?

Boy is this different from a PC.

EDIT: Oops forgot to leave my question :)

Any tips as to essential reading / utilities / basic software, is appreciated.

I bought this setup for use as my personal computer.

It will be used for photography, web research, my iTunes/iPhone 4 sync via MobileMe schedule, contacts etc.

Thanks!

At work we are centered on PCs & vertical market software.

If you're being serious...and not just being "goofy"...sounds to me that you should have done a little more research before making these purchases.

And if you really are this lost/confused...why did you switch to Apple/Macintosh hardware in the first place (rather than staying with the Windows hardware you sound familiar with)?

Thanks for asking, I don't have any specific issues yet.

I'm particularly impressed with all the great helpful info for switchers on Apples web site. I'm pleasantly surprised with all that I see and am approaching this with great enthusiasm.

Really? That's not exactly what it sounds like with the title you gave this thread...and the info in your initial post.;)

But hey...if you're good...:)

Just a little humor in my post, if that was out of place, my apologies.

I began with a Mac years ago, like what I've seen recently, so I decided to switch out of the PC platform at home and return to Macs.

It was hard to know if you were really "goofing" or not...you didn't say "He He" or "Ha Ha"...or use any sort of "emoticon".;)

Good luck. If you really do get stuck...we're here to help!:)

A great way at getting software for a good price is to check out some of the bundle sites that offer software at a huge discount. That's how I really bulked out my applications.

Let's see "reading / utilities / basic software"

What type of reading? I do most of my reading in my browser.. so if you could give me a bit more info on what you are looking for.

Utilities.. Data Rescue for those scary times, that will hopefully never come. 1Password is something you just have to use.. I can't get by without it anymore. Printopia is awesome to print from your iPhone to any printer or send to dropbox or your computer from your phone. Hmm..

Skype is awesome of course, Google Chrome, LaunchBar, Default Folder X, Adium, hmm.. Im a developer so I have a lot of developer tools I use also, ForkLift, BBEdit, etc.

If there is anything that you're looking for specifically Ill see if I can help you out :)

I put a smiley in the thread title but it didn't come out well.

Then I got interrupted and forgot my question. Went back a few minutes later with an edit.

So much for my attempt to get off to a good start :)

Rather than focus on acquiring more apps, I would for the moment suggest you focus more on studying the apps you currently have.

Read the essay in my signature for more on this, and congrats on your new computer!

OP - Don't worry. It's rather good being a fish out of water particularly when you have the support of the knowledgeable (and largely friendly) users on this site. Welcome to the world of Apple - you're going to love it.

I always recommend the book "Switching to the Mac" by David Pogue. It is a part of the Missing Manual series--it will help you learn how to do the things on your Mac that you used to do on your PC.

Thanks to all who have responded to my thread, I'm having a great time with my new MBP!

I'm knee deep in learning the nuances and various aspects of OS X. It's very interesting.

Cheers :)
