• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

My daughter sent me 2 videos of her baby, but I can't open the files. I even tried opening them on my Windows netbook and it didn't work. I tried uploading one of the files as an attachment and got a message that it was an invalid file. How can this be corrected.

I have a Mac mini running Mac OS X 10.6.7 (10J869).

I just remembered another incident of apps not working last year. I received a .wmv file and when I tried opening it. I got error messages. I'm attaching the error messages I received for the .mov and .wmv files

wmv Error Message.jpg

mov error msg.jpg .

I wrote to the forum back then and this is the advise I received.

"If you have both the latest Flip4Mac WMV Player and Perian, then the next thing to try would be to download VLC and see if it will play it.

The basic problem is that Windows is a slut.

By which I mean it tries to support literally every codec anyone out there (except Apple) comes up with instead of picking a format that seems to do the best job and making that the preferred standard."

I tried all these options then and nothing was resolved. Please help! I want to see the video of my new granddaughter.

Thanks,
Helen

Will I be able to play .wmv and .mov files?

My daughter resent the videos through her iphone and I was able to open them. The files were .3gp. I couldn't open them on my Windows netbook. I downloaded Ultimate player and it finally worked on my netbook.

Just for the record, QuickTime can both play and export 3gp files without issue.

VLC won't play .mov files. With .wmv you can see the slider moving, but there is no video. This particular .wmv didn't have sound so I don't know if the sound works. I don't know if I should download mplayer extended. I downloading it and then it doesn't fix my problem.
