Hi

Im a recent switcher. I bought a powerbook g4 on ebay and it came without an install disk. I now want to run gcc and found that i need xcode 3.1.4. Any idea where I can get it ? preferably free.

Not free, I'm afraid. What version of OS X is on the PowerBook G4? Also, you might want to take a look at what this site has to say.

I'm not sure the version of X-Code that's on the Tiger disk is the same as that for Leopard. What I don't understand about your system is when I had Leopard running, X-Code had already been installed automatically. Are you sure it's not already installed? Look for the X11.app in your Applications, Utilities folder.

XCode is not the same as X11. X11 is a windowing system while XCode is a development environment. :)

X11 is installed by default but XCode comes on disc 2 (could be the first disc). Since Apple has started charging for XCode, you'll need the install discs. I say this because it doesn't look like Apple is offering XCode 3 as a download anymore.

Thanks for the correction Van. When I looked for X-Code, I did see where the older version is no longer available as a download from Apple. However, if you join their developer program you can download the latest version for free. LINK

The App store has it for $4.99 but I'm not sure which version it is. LINK

It appears that you can indeed still get Xcode 3 through the ADC. I hadn't noticed that before - it only becomes evident when you actually login.

It would be a really good idea to get a set of install disks for that machine, as you've already discovered it can be very useful.

You might be able to find some on ebay, but be VERY careful to get EITHER a retail Leopard disk set (black discs) or the grey discs for your EXACT model and no other (because others won't work). Forget about Tiger -- it's older and a step backward from Leopard.
