Google bestows 1Gbps fiber network on Kansas City, Kansas

Kansas City, Kansas will have a new Internet provider next year, one that operates a 1Gbps fiber-to-the-home network, provides "open access" to any ISP wanting to use the pipes, and charges fees in line with current rates for much slower connections. That new Internet provider? Google.

Google also hopes the project will serve as a kick in the pants to major US Internet providers, most of whom have been slow to invest in a fiber infrastructure. In a video released today, Google execs—including cofounder Sergey Brin—talk about how everything digital has exploded in speed in recent years… except for most Internet connections. The goal seems to be: show America that ISPs simply aren't offering what they could be offering, and by building the test network, applying pressure on network operators around the country to invest more heavily.

I haven't been much a fan of some of Google's practices of late, but this one makes me want to give Schmidt a big fat sloppy kiss. Ok… maybe not quite that far.

Although I do wonder if Google will be harvesting data through anything that moves through their pipes.
