• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I have recently made the switch from pc to Mac and I am trying finish bridging the last few gaps that I have come to.
I am trying to use iMovie11 for editing some avchd files that I have on my external drive that were written by windows 7 64 bit and saved in VLS file type. It appears that iMovie does not like this file type.
Hoping someone can tell me what to convert my files to or perhaps what I am missing.
Thank you

Try converting to Mp4 with MPEG Streamclip....Although iMovie 11 will handle AVCHD files...have never heard of VLS...?

I'll bet iMovie will import the native files off the camera without converting first...FWIW...

Yes I am expecting the import from the camera to iMovie quite straight forward.
My issue is several clips previously taken, which I have now transferred to an external drive. If all else fails, I will still be able to use MS movie maker.

Export from MPEGStreamclip to Quicktime, using the Apple Intermediate Codec for the best format for iMovie.
