That's very interesting. I wonder what the real purpose is? It's hard to believe they would add something like that simply for "troubleshooting".

Although I have no need for it, I can see some of that being useful. I'm sure I'll try out the capture feature despite having no use for it (that I can see now). I hope that if this feature lasts until the end, they extend the functionality to all network devices.

Definitely. Will be interesting to see it perform next to other options out there like iStumbler, Ethereal, etc.

It looks to be much more limited than some of the other options but this is all speculation given that all I have is a screenshot ;). The article also mentions that the app saves the results to a pcap file. If there's no native way to read them (Console?), we're going to need a third party app.

I can see this being useful to the more savvy. But for the typical person who visits Mac Forums with network or airport problems, probably not much help. However, this tool would be helpful to the Apple Techs who work the support phones and the geniuses at Apple stores.

Imagine a user calling support with a typical problem of not being able to connect or connection dropping, etc. The Apple tech on the other end of the phone instructs the caller to run the diagnostics.....

If I read that article right, then there should be something similar in the location they specified. I found "Airport Base Station Agent.app" in /System/Library/Core Services.

Couldn't open it of course, but there are some questionable (curiosity hit me) other apps besides Archive, Dock etc.

Does setup for a wireless look to be much more complicated in Lion than it was previously with all the

No. It just means the process will be much more documented this time around. on the outside it's just a few user clicks to get things set up. But under the hood a lot happens during this process. And all this is what is documented.
