Forum noob, but Mac user of 20 years. Please be gentle.
Last night, I finally made the leap to Snow Leopard then iLife '11 on my MacBook Pro (2.16 Ghz Intel Core Duo, with 1 GB 667 MHz RAM). I tried to upgrade to 10.6.6 2X, but both times it failed to expand, so after spending hours with this, I started to settle on 10.6.3.
I was aware of the issue with the new iPhoto, causing it to appear as if one's photos have disappeared. So I made sure to download 9.1 before I opened the new iPhoto. I'd read of no problems with iMovie '11, so I thought that would be fine.
Here's what happening for me. With iMovie, I tried to open old projects, and was unable to. After looking around the forums, I see that '11 is not backwards compatible with '09 (6.0.3). Annoying, but not the end of the world. But I'm still having two major problems.
1. When I open old iMovie Projects, iMovie HD (6.0.3) opens and the movies load as normal. BUT there are no PLAY, FAST FORWARD or REWIND buttons. I can see the first frame of my movie and the clips, but I can't do anything with them. I've found the appropriate plist pref and moving that to the desktop and restarting does nothing.
2. When I open iMovie 9, I can't do anything at all with that. New project is grayed out. Import is grayed out. Again, moving plist does nothing. Nice icon, though.
With iPhoto, I open the new version and no album appears and I can't see any of my photos. I'm not panicked that my pictures are gone, because I've read enough about this and see the pictures still exist. But when I click on them individually, they only open in preview. As with iMovie, movie plist pref does nothing.
In a nutshell, help. I thought by being patient and waiting for everything to get patched I could safely upgrade now and everything was fine. Sadly, that is not the case. I would really appreciate any assistance from people more capable than myself (of which I am sure there many).
