Advice Needed For Old iMovie User

Hi all,

Would really appreciate some guidance on my current iMovie issue.

I've been using iMovie for about seven years, and while I potentially have access to Final Cut (I can probably get access to it via work) and some training from a couple of years back, I am so happy with iMovie 6.0.3 (2006 I think) and frankly so adept on it, I've not stepped up.

I can't stand the new iMovie, which is making things problematic, for instance; my camera (Sony HDR CX115) can only import onto the new iMovie.

I shot a friend's wedding yesterday, and the only way for me to edit at the top of my game is to get the files from the new iMovie, to the old version (basically from my work-borrowed powerbook to my home-based iMac). To do this I think I need to export the files as .movs or whatever, then memory stick them over.

So here are my questions:

1. Is there a quicker way to get the files into the old iMovie (AVCHD files I believe)?

2. Should I just step up to Final Cut?

3. Am I being silly ignoring iMovie circa 2011?

I need to make a decision on my future editing, because time is becoming the essence with more friends' weddings coming thick and fast!

I'm was also a dyed in the wool iMovie6 user because of the shortcomings of iMovie8 and 9. However, I would recommend iMovie11 as Apple have now got it back to being as good as iMovie6.

Thanks mate. I upgraded the laptop to 11 on this advice.

Pleased to see most of the toys are back, but I cannot handle the linear representation of the clips. I need to go through all footage and give the usable clips names. Unless there's a way to turn my clips back into individual boxes to rifle through, I don't think I can hack it!

Just name them as separate Events when you import them.

See your logic, but I don't see it working. I have three hours of footage, and want to break the clips down into anything from 3-second to 10 minute segments, and delete all the chaff. If I have to do that on the import, I'll shoot myself!

iMovie 9 and 11 are virtually identical...basically audio and trailer enhancements...few others...but the interface and usability is the same...
