Hi all,

I recently got Virtual PC and when it mounts on my hard drive and the icon just appears as a peice of paper. I try to open it but it says it cannot find the application. But it HAS To be a file because its size is 1.3 gb.

Help is VERY appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Tphiptop.

The message you are receiving isn't saying it isn't a file, it is merely asking for an application to open the file. What file type is showing when you choose "Get Info"?
When you put in your VPC CD, did you ever get the disc icon?

You might want to consider a permissions repair (Applications>Utillities>DiskUtility), or checking your intsall media for dirt, dust, etc.
Since you just bought it, if there is a problem with your VPC install disc, you should be able to get it replaced under warranty.

Problem is...I didn't buy it. My friend uploaded it to his FTP and I downloaded it from it.

All I know is, that when I downloaded it, it mounted itself on my desktop, and I go and try to open it and it asks me which program to open it with, but I have no idea.

EDIT: It says its a .dmg file.

Sorry, then there really isn't much that anyone could really help you with that here since you admittedly are trying to use an illegal copy. Piracy and unlicensed software talk is a no-no here.

No illegal activity (e.g. warez) or porn.

Maybe you can get your friend to give you hand with it, if you really need help.

I realize that. Thanks, BUT....

It is not a warez at all. My friend has bought a family pack and has 4 different serials for it, it's the same thing as the Tiger OS, whether you manually give your friend, or family member the CD or upload the program to a PRIVATE ftp, its not considered to be a warez at all.

I am very against any piracy towards music, movies, software, ect.

From what you have just said, you cross the line. Your friend is a family pack with four serial numbers. Since you are not one of the family, etc.

I am pretty sure its a figure of speech. I ran over to my local Apple store and they said it's fine to distribute the serials as long the person(s) is a friend of the family and has been approved by the original buyer of the serials.

So seeings how everything is legal, can we continue....

It's a .dmg, how do I open it, like what program?

just double click on the .dmg and it will mount its self in finder then go from there

I never said it was warez ;)
I merely quoted the Forum Rules and bolded the illegal part.
Your friend is also not being totally upfront with you. There is NO family pack for VPC for Mac. The only option to get more than one license is with a volume business deal, where the smallest number of serials is five, not four...

Also, VPC is a Microsoft product. The staff at the Apple store are not likely aware of the EULA for VPC.

In a nutshell, using a personal FTP site with which to transfer the software, even if a multiple volume license was purchased, it against the EULA and therefore, illegal.
