Help with iphoto

On my imac it keeps coming up with start up disk full I presume this is due to the large amount of pic's I currently have on it, So i purchased a external hard drive to put these pic's on is there a way like on a PC that you can back up in one location and still access these pic's through iphoto from the ext hd. I warn you I am new to using a mac so as basic as possible please.

But I would suggest taking an inventory of your startup disk - I'd be really surprised if photo files were the primary culprit of your disk space issues. Once you get some space cleared up, give this tool a try:
