How do I use the f keys?

Recently new to the mac world and I am doing work on a virtual pc using remote desktop and I need to use f12. If I press the f12 button it increases the volume. I figured the solution would be fn+f12 but that brings up the dashboard. Any solutions?

Try the "cmd" key and the "f" key together.
